With everyone binge-watching (or watched) the latest season of Netflix’s Stranger Things, I thought it’d be interesting for our 50th Role Call to make it a retro one. That’s right, today we are casting Stranger Things if it was made in the ’80s! The 1980s gave television and films some of the best teen and character actors ever, so naturally, we had a great list of people to choose from…
Alyssa Milano as Eleven
In 1984, Milano landed a role on the hit sitcom, Who’s the Boss?. Milano played Samantha Micelli, the outspoken daughter of Tony Danza’s starring character. The show ran for eight successful seasons, turning Alyssa Milano into one of the leading teen icons of 1980s American pop culture. She’d be perfect as the series resident super-powered kid.
Corey Feldman as Mike
Feldman owned the 1980s starring films such as Gremlins, The Goonies, and The Lost Boys. He might not be the obvious choice for Mike, but pairing him with Milano would have been a huge get for any television series.
Henry Thomas as Will
Thomas wowed audiences as Elliott in Stephen Spielberg‘s E.T. His wide-eyed performance would lend itself to the character of Will. Like Will, Elliott came into contact with an otherworldly creature, only Elliott got a friend out of the encounter and Will got nightmares for life.
Sean Astin as Dustin
Astin, who actually appeared in Season 2 as Bob Newby, would have been hilarious as the fan-favorite character Dustin. He has experience as a child adventurer having been a Goonie! Plus Dustin is kind of the unofficial leader of the group anyways. He always organizes everything and everyone. Just like Astin does. They are both the heart of their respective team of explorers.
Alfonso Riberio as Lucas
Before starring with Will Smith in Fresh Prince, Riberio danced with the king of Pop, Michael Jackson, and starred in the 80s sitcom, Silver Spoons. He would have been great as Lucas, even though he would have been a little older than the rest of his friends.
Winona Ryder as Nancy
From Will’s mom to Mike’s sister! Ryder, who plays one of the parental roles now on Stranger Things, Ryder was once a rambunctious teenager in her own right. To play the outspoken and mostly annoying Nancy, Ryder would be perfect in the role!
Jon Cryer as Jonathan
As the awkward weird photographer kid, why not the most awkward weird friend of the ’80s, Jon Cryer? He was a standard of 80’s teen films and carved out a nice niche for himself later on the comedy, Two and a Half Men.
Charlie Sheen as Steve
For the cool kid in school, you need someone who is cool and has good comedic timing. Why not Charlie Sheen? He also has the whole big 80s hair like Steve has too!
Deborah Van Valkenburgh as Joyce
Valkenburgh has been a tough chick since The Warriors and Streets of Fire. I’d be interesting to see her play against type as a parental figure.
Craig T. Nelson as Hopper
He’s been the Coach and Mr. Incredible. He also has experience in dealing with supernatural forces as seen in The Poltergeist. That’s why Nelson is our pick for grizzled sheriff, Hopper!
Well, that’s who we would have cast for an 80s version of Stranger Things. What do you think? Agree? Disagree? Let us know in the comments. Start tuned for future Role Calls only on HipsterZOMBIEJoint.com!
