Director Guy Ritchie’s live-action adaptation is a very good film. However, it’s far from being the greatness we have come to expect from Disney. Instead of soaring to a new world its perfectly content playing it safe. The best thing about the film is Will Smith as the Genie. Despite an inability to really belt out some of the film’s memorable songs, Smith’s charm and charisma shines throughout.
Mena Massoud turns in a star making performance as Aladdin. He’s likable, he sells the psychically of the character and has a decent enough voice. But the one thing that he doesn’t sell is any chemistry with Naomi Scott’s Jasmine.
I really wanted to like Scott’s Jasmine but something just felt off. Scott is a good actress, but one can’t help but think of all the Bollywood actresses that were passed on in favor of Scott. Beyond that, Jasmine’s character just comes off as an entitled brat. She wants to be Sultan because the hand full of times she has snuck out of the palace she hasn’t liked what she has seen? I mean what qualifies her to lead?
Lastly, Marwen Kenzari’s Jafar just wasn’t given too much to do. It’s alluded to that he was once a thief but as the film goes on he just transforms into a generic villain. A feel like a lot was left on the cutting room floor for him and Jasmine.
The pacing of the film at times just feels very rushed, especially towards the end. But despite a few missteps, the film does get several things right. The costumes are beautiful. The dance routines are big and bombastic. But the missteps are unavoidable.
With that said, HipsterZOMBIEJoint gives Aladdin a 6.5 out of 10.
