Deadline is reporting that director James Gunn, who was previously fired for his controversial tweets, has now been reinstated by Disney and will in fact shoot Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But what brought about this later hour change? Walt Disney Studios President, Alan Horn, was impressed by Gunn’s transparency and apology following the tweets about pedophilia and rape. Gunn took responsiblity for his ill advised jokes. Gunn never lashed out at Disney. Instead he owned his mistake and fell on his own sword. Filming will commence on GotG Vol. 3 once Gunn wraps his film for DC Films/Warner Bros, Suicide Squad 2.
Bottom Line, I think Gunn had endeared himself amongst fellow Marvel Studios directors like Taika Waititi (Thor Ragnarok) and The Russo Brothers (Avengers) who Disney probably tried to plug into the GotG franchise and they most likely turned it down. That is of course speculation. However the GotG franchise is purely Gunn’s baby. He brought life to those characters that no one, even comic fans, cared about. Gunn started the franchise, he should be allowed to end his story. Luckily, he will be able to now.
