Riverdale Spin-Off Casts Their Katy Keene

First off let me just say I have absolutely HATED how Riverdale has completely mishandled the Josie and the Pussycats characters. They basically phased out Melody and Valerie after the second season and turned Josie from a badass to a whiney rich girl, going completely against the character of Josie.

Maybe this third Riverdale spin-off (the second being Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) will help redeem the character by giving her a reboot of sorts.

Riverdale’s Ashleigh Murray, who plays Josie McCoy, has been cast in the spinoff series Katy Keene. Murray is set to continue her role as Josie, but a 20-something Josie who moves to New York City to try and make it big as a singer/songwriter. In January, the CW ordered a pilot of the show. If it gets picked up to series, Murray won’t return to Riverdale.

Explains CW president Mark Pedowtiz, “Katy Keene actually takes place years after Riverdale High School. So, at the moment, there are no plans to do [crossovers]. And, if any of those Riverdale characters should come to Katy Keene, they will come as an older self.”

Murray has been a series regular on Riverdale since the drama premiered on The CW in Jan. 2017. Though she was introduced as the lead singer of Josie and the Pussycats, the other two members of her band — Valerie Brown (played by Hayley Law) and Melody Valentine (played by Asha Bromfield) — have since disappeared.
