The last time moviegoers saw Batman he was a jokey, old mentor who seemed way out of his depth in Joss Whedon’s Justice League. Despite being the most comic accurate Batman, Ben Affleck was burnt out by the behind scenes drama of Warner Bros and his personal life.
Enter director Matt Reeves.
Reeves has given us films such as Cloverfield, Let Me In, and the best parts of The Planet of the Apes trilogy. With Affleck departing from the role, Reeves will turn his attention towards a younger actor to play the Dark Knight. Not a year one story like Batman Begins, but a story focusing on a Batman still in his first couple of years of crime fighting. The film will focus on Batman using his detective skills against his rogues gallery. The story will give Batman and arc that will reportedly have a beginning and an end. But who should play the new Batman? This is who HipsterZOMBIEJoint would choose for the cast:
Jonathan Groff as Batman
I can’t take credit for this fancast, but after reading Revengeofthefans reasoning why Mindhunter’s Jonathan Groff should be the next Batman, I’m sold. He’s a broadway star who can manipulate his voice, he has a gloomy exterior and he’s young enough (33 to be exact) to hold a franchise plus possible team up films. Sign this man up WB!
Charles Dance as Alfred Pennyworth
Michael Cane. Jeremy Irons. Those are two big names to follow. However, Game of Thrones Charles Dance has the class and prestige to bring to the role of Alfred. He would be a great mentor and father figure for a younger Bruce.
Tom Selleck as Commissioner Gordon
Selleck already plays a police commissioner on CBS’ Blue Bloods. It would be easy for him to transition to being a Gotham commissioner. Selleck has the look and stash to be a great new Jim Gordon.
Eiza Gonzalez as Catwoman
Gonzalez has a reputation for playing sultry bad girls on TV and the big screen. She has the look and fierce attitude to play a new Selina Kyle aka Catwoman.
Mahershala Ali as Two-Face
Ali is an academy award winning actor who has fantastic depth and range. Just watch how he easily multiple versions of himself on HBO’s True Detective and you can see why he’d make an awesome Two-Face. Plus he’s no stranger to comic properties having starred in the first season of Netflix’s Luke Cage.
Bill Skarsgard as The Riddler
Everyone think Riddler is just a nerd dressed in green, but truth be told he is a maniacal genius. Skarsgard has shown he can be that in spades on Hulu’s Castle Rock and the new big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s IT.
Josh Gad as The Penguin
Gad has been posting on Twitter for months that he should be the Penguin in a Batman film. Honestly I totally agree. He would make a perfect crime Lord in the DC Film-verse.
Well there you have it, that’s who we would cast for Matt Reeves Batman. But who would you cast? Agree, disagree with our picks? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned for future Role Calls only at HipsterZOMBIEJoint.com.
