James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” Gets A Release Date; Is A Relaunch Not A Sequel?

DC Films and WB hit fans with a one two punch last night as we got news on The Batman film by Matt Reeves and then this interesting tidbit about the rumored Suicide Squad sequel.

Director James Gunn is indeed directing the new Suicide Squad film after months of rumors surrounding his involvement.

Furthermore, THR says…

“The sequel has the title of The Suicide Squad and is not being labeled a direct sequel but as a relaunch…

Sources say that Gunn’s focus is to take the franchise in a new direction with mostly an all-new cast of characters and actors. Sources also say that the project is also very much rooted in Gunn’s vibe, as seen in the Guardians movies.”

The bad and good meaning the only hold over it looks like from the first film is Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn. With the statement that new members and new cast it looks like Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, and Jared Leto might all be out.

The new Suicide Squad will arrive in theaters August 6th, 2021. The same year Matt Reeves new Batman hits theaters.
