HipZOMJoint Movie Review: Reign of the Supermen

DC Entertainment returns with the second part of the “Death of Superman” story titled “Reign of the Supermen.” The animated film is directed by Sam Liu and features an impressive cast that includes Jerry O’Connell, Rebecca Romijn, Rainn Wilson, Cress Williams, Cameron Monaghan, Rosario Dawson, and Jason O’Mara.

The story jumps 6 months into the future after Superman sacrificed himself to defeat Doomsday. With the Justice League stretched beyond its limits a new quartet of heroes arrive all vying for the title of Superman.

Superboy, Steel, Cyborg Superman, and the Eradicator. Each one of them is different in their personalities and crime-fighting style compared to the original Man of Steel; leaving the world questioning which one, if any, is the true Superman come back to life. Lois Lane, still reeling from Clark’s death, decides to investigate.

Suddenly, when the League is trapped in another dimension, the four Supermen must rise to the challenge to protect the Earth. However one of them isn’t what he appears to be.

The story improves on the original comic book storyline, switching out Mongul with Darkseid for the betterment of the film. Cyborg Superman being in league with Darkseid just makes more sense and ties the overall plot together in a smoother way. Cyborg Superman remains the main protagonist with Darkseid being a phantom menace. It is revealed Darkseid is the one who sent Doomsday to Earth.

The voice acting in the film is serviceable. Monaghan’s portrayal of Superboy is the real stand out performance in the film. Wilson and Romijn remain the weakest voice actors in the cast.

The animation looks a little rushed this time out, characters look very stiff and oddly shaped. DC animation still misses Bruce Timm.

The film is PG-13 which allows them to use some harsh language. Some of the lines dropped, however, are worse for it. It doesn’t come across as being natural and feels forced like they are trying to get that PG-13 rating.

Overall, Reign of the Supermen succeeds with its story but stumbles in the animation department. With that said HipsterZOMBIEJoint gives Reign of the Supermen a 6.0 out of 10.
