Aquaman isn’t just the king of the seven seas, he’s also the king of the Box Office! The DC Films/ Warner Bros underwater action/adventure got off to a giant start when it debuted in China.
Over the holiday weekend, the James Wan directed film rode the hype wave domestically. Aquaman easily crushed his competition at the box office. Bumblebee and Mary Poppins Returns both had respectable numbers, but it was Jason Momoa’s Aquaman that reigned supreme.
As it stands, Aquaman has grossed $106 million domestically since its launch last week and has already made $550 million globally. To think that it could make more than movies like Spider-Man: Homecoming or Wonder Woman is downright stunning.
Looking at the movie’s long-term box officeprospects, a new report indicates that Aquaman should have no problem crossing the $900 million mark before wrapping up its theatrical run. If things go very well, it could be looking at the even more impressive $1 billion milestone. If that does happen, it would be the fifth movie released in 2018 to do so, behind Avengers: Infinity War ($2.04 billion), Black Panther ($1.34 billion), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($1.304 billion) and Incredibles 2 ($1.24 billion).
Not only is the film on its way to being the highest grossing DC Film (currently it’s Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice with $873.6 million) of all time, but it has also helped recoup a lot of money lost on Justice League’s miserable box office performance. This bolds well for DC’s other big tent pole film coming in April, Shazam.
As for Aquaman I’d expect news of DC Films fast tracking a sequel as soon as possible.
