DC Films is really starting to find its stride with their heroes in their solo adventures. Like Wonder Woman, Aquaman works as an origin/reboot for the character. It doesn’t completely forget the events of Justice League but it does go out of its way to right the many wrongs of Justice League.
Director James Wan fully realizes a robust and fantastical Atlantis. The underwater world is perfected with each character’s movement and interaction with their environment.
Jason Momoa reprises his role as the title character and does a decent job. If you didn’t like his “Aqua-bro” take on the character, not much has changed. However by the end of the film he transforms into the Aquaman fans may be more accustomed to. Amber Heard also does a serviceable job in the role of Mera. But the film’s main protagonist Orm played by Patrick Wilson does the most heavy lifting in the movie. The role of Ocean Master would have been a cheese parade in lesser hands. But Wilson pulls it off even when the dialogue gets really absurd.
Black Manta played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II gets enough screen time to set himself up as the next villain in a possible sequel. His costume and origin is pitch perfect.
Aquaman might not make Avengers: Infinity War money at the box office but at the end of the day it doesn’t need to. It’s the perfect shot in the arm for the rebounding DC Film universe. It’s a fun spectacle that entertains and is a delight to behold on the big screen.
With that said HipsterZOMBIEJoint gives Aquaman a strong 8.5 out of 10. A must see on the big screen!
