HipZOMJoint Movies PICKS Of The Week 12/19/18

The Holiday weekend is officially kicking off today in the cineplexes! 4 big time new films will be debuting in theaters today as they duke it out for the Christmas weekend supremacy at the box office! All four movies have something different for audiences. An undersea superhero, a returning magical maid, a talking alien car, and…a guy taking pictures dolls. Let’s check out these new films below:

AQUAMAN

Aquaman is the sixth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Directed by James Wan, with a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, from a story by Geoff Johns, Wan, and Beall, it stars Jason Momoa as the title character, with Amber HeardWillem DafoePatrick WilsonDolph LundgrenYahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Kidman in supporting roles. It is the third live-action theatrical film featuring Aquaman, following Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017), and the first full-length feature film centered around the character. In Aquaman, Arthur Curry, the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, must step forward to lead his people against his half-brother, Orm, who seeks to unite the seven underwater kingdoms against the surface world. The film is described as Indiana Jones meets Star Wars under the sea. I’m already sold.

Mary Poppins Returns

Mary Poppins Returns is directed by Rob Marshall, with a screenplay written by David Magee and a story by Magee, Marshall, and John DeLuca. Based on the book series of the same name by P. L. Travers, this sequel to 1964’s Mary Poppins stars Emily Blunt as the eponymous character, with Lin-Manuel MirandaBen WhishawEmily MortimerJulie WaltersDick Van DykeAngela LansburyColin Firth, and Meryl Streep in supporting roles. Set in 1930s London, two decades after the events of the original film, it sees Mary Poppins, the former nanny of Jane and Michael Banks, returning after a family tragedy. It seems almost sacrilegious to see anyone but Julie Andrews play Poppins, but it is Disney, so they might just pull it off.

Bumblebee

Bumblebee is the sixth installment of the live-action Transformers film series and a prequel to 2007’s Transformers. Directed by Travis Knight in his first live-action film and written by Christina Hodson, the film stars Hailee SteinfeldJohn CenaJorge Lendeborg Jr.John OrtizJason Drucker, and Pamela Adlon, with Dylan O’BrienPeter CullenAngela Bassett and Justin Theroux in voice roles. It is the first live-action Transformers film not to be directed by Michael Bay, though he still acts as a producer. Transformers hasn’t been a great franchise, but Bumblebee is getting a lot of good buzz (no pun intended) and might be the turning point the franchise needs.

Welcome To Marwen

Welcome to Marwen directed by Robert Zemeckis, who co-wrote the script with Caroline Thompson. It is inspired by Jeff Malmberg’s 2010 documentary Marwencol. The film stars Steve CarellLeslie MannDiane KrugerMerritt WeverJanelle MonáeEiza GonzálezGwendoline Christie, Leslie Zemeckis, and Neil Jackson, and follows the true story of Mark Hogancamp, a man struggling with PTSD who, after having his memory erased from being physically assaulted, creates a fictional village to ease his trauma.

All of these films are debuting this today and tomorrow in theaters everywhere.
