Anna and the Apocalypse is an ambitious Christmas/zombie/musical that fails to completely deliver on all fronts. The music is catchy enough and the stars are for the most part serviceable.
Ella Hunt is the real stand out of the film as Anna. Her character is really the only one who is given a full arc. The rest of the cast is pretty much there to be back up singers and eventually canon fodder.
Unlike something like Shaun of the Dead where you cared about everyone in the cast, Anna’s group of friends just come across as whiny and dare say…boring.
The zombies themselves are a welcome sight to see by the time they eventually crawl onto the scene.
The one really glaring misstep of the film is the need to have a main antagonist outside of the zombies. Paul Kaye’s over the top school headmaster, Arthur Savage, is like a really bad cartoonish villain. He nearly ruins the third act of the film with buffoonish antics that would have been better served on a Disney TV movie.
It’s not that the film is a failure, it just doesn’t fully succeed in anything it sets out to do. With that said HipsterZOMBIEJoint gives Anna and the Apocalypse a weak 5 out of 10.
