Long before Eleven was fighting Demogorgon, the 1980s their own Stranger Things-esque cult classic known as “The Explorers.”
“Cary Fukunaga and David Lowery are teaming to write a pilot script for Paramount Television based on the beloved 1985 Joe Dante-directed Explorers, the coming-of-age sci-fi film that starred Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix. Fukunaga and Lowery will write the script and bible, and one of them will direct the pilot should it get to that.”
The film revolved around a trio of friends who manage to construct their own homemade spaceship and travel into outer space where they get mixed up with some very odd looking aliens. It was a product of its time that became a cult classic over time. Under the supervision of Fukunaga who worked on things like the new Stephen King’s IT, HBO’s True Detective, and Netflix’s recent Maniac series, this reboot could potentially be great.
