HipZOMJoint’s Top 10 New Final Girls

With Halloween coming out this weekend, Jamie Lee Curtis returns as the original final girl, Laurie Strode. The final girl is a proud tradition in horror movies. It is the final heroine that stands between defeat or total victory for the villain in the film. In times past we had such memorable heroines as Strode, Thompson, and Prescott. But who are the most memorable final girls of the past 20 years? Here’s HipsterZOMBIEJoint’s Top 10 New Final Girls. In no particular order:

Max Cartwright from Final Girls (Taissa Farmiga)

Max plays the daughter of 80’s scream Queen. When she is whisked away into one of her mother’s films that is a knockoff of Friday The 13th. Max rises to the occasion to be the final heroine and goes one on one with the slasher and wins.

Nancy from The Shallows (Blake Lively)

Nancy wasn’t just the final girl, she was the only girl against a man-eating shark. Her will to survive and cunning earns her a spot on this list.

Erin from You’re Next (Sharni Vinson)

Erin might be the toughest of the new final girls. A survivalist enthusiast has to survive a bloody family reunion. Erin brutally takes out her attackers with bloody and innovative tactics.

Maddie from Hush (Kate Siegel)

Maddie is one of the strongest final girls. Her handicap as a deaf person doesn’t hold her back when she attacked by a masked intruder in her solitary home in the woods. Her intelligence as a writer helps her survive the ordeal.

Jesse from Gerald’s Game (Gina Gugino)

When a weekend getaway in a private hideaway goes wrong Jesse must find a way to survive. Did I mention she has to do so while being handcuffed to a bed in a house surrounded by nothing but wilderness? Jesse goes through the roughest endurance test to earn her spot on this list.

Erin from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003 (Jessica Biel)

Erin just wanted to smoke some pot while driving through Texas to go see her favorite band. However, when she is forced to throw down with the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface and his inbred family, she does so like a furious warrior woman.

Tree from Happy Death Day (Jessica Rothe)

Despite having an unfortunate name like Tree, the Happy Death Day main protagonist is able to be the final girl multiple times in one film. Tree dies numerous times only to keep coming back.

Jay from It Follows (Maika Munroe)

Betrayed, chloroformed, and left behind as demon bate. Not what one expects to happen the first time they have sex. However, for Jay it is. She and her friends do battle against the demon creature parading around town as naked old people.

Split 2

Casey from Split (Anya Taylor-Joy)

Shy and reserved Casey survived her group of “friends” not because she was the strongest but because she was the weakest. But it’s in her weakness that she found her greatest strength. The ability to be okay with the fact that she is damaged.

Christine from Drag Me To Hell (Alison Lohman)

Not too many people try to get ahead at their job by screwing over old gypsy women. Christine did. Despite being cursed, she handled the haunting like a champ and took the fight right to the old woman.
