HipZOMJoint Movie Review: A Simple Favor

Based on the 2017 novel by Darcey Bell, “A Simple Favor” is a thriller/comedy by Bridesmaid director Paul Feig. The film stars Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick. The film plays out like a mix between A Girl on a Train and Single White Female but never fully commits to being either a comedy or a full on thriller. Instead it walks a fine line between both.

The film revolves around single mother/blogger Stephanie (Kendrick) as she tries to solve the disappearance of her new rich friend Emily (Lively) who holds a dark and mysterious past. Kendrick delivers her regular “Gee-golly” character we have to to know her for but it’s Lively who is the true star of the film. Her portrayal of a detached and no-nonsense businesses woman is fantastic. She literally owns every scene she is in.

The marketing for the film really did the film a disservice as this is a movie that I believe will continue to have legs at the box office due to good word of mouth. The marketing made this film just seem like a chick flick when it actually is a pretty dark and twisted murder mystery. Yes it does have some comedic elements but this film also get really dark.

This is arguably Paul Feig’s best film. It’s blend of comedy and thriller elements elevate it to be something really special.

With that said, HipZOMJoint gives A Simple Favor a strong 8 out of 10.
