Director Todd Phillips has just released an eerie new test screen footage of actor Joaquin Phoenix standing in front of the camera as the unassuming character Arthur Fleck. Light flickers across the background as we get distorted footage of Phoenix in some kind of clown makeup. The last image reveals Phoenix as the Joker. His smile quickly morphs into a sadistic stare as the screen goes to black.
The Joker film is intended to be the first film in a series of DC-based films separate from the shared DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by Todd Phillips from a screenplay he wrote with Scott Silver, and stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker, along with Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham. In Joker, a failed stand-up comedian is driven insane and becomes a psychopathic murderer.
The synopsis for the film takes place during the 1980s, a failed stand-up comedian turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City.
Joker is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on October 4, 2019.
