HipZOMJoint Movie Pick of the Week 8/10/18: The MEG

Jason Statham vs a giant prehistoric shark. That right there is enough make you lay down some cold hard cash for a movie ticket and escape the blistering heat of summer.

The MEG originated as a book in 1997 called Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror written by author Steve Alten. The film was originally set to be made by director Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever) but he eventually left the project.

Director Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) then stepped in to helm the project. Despite originally being rumored as a hard R gore-fest, the studio behind the film opted for a friendlier PG-13 rating.

The film stars Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao, and Cliff Curtis, and follows a group of scientists who must stop a 75-foot Megalodon shark from terrorizing a beach.

The MEG is now playing at a theater near you.
