Star Wars Episode IX To Be Split Into Two Films?

Filming has begun on Star Wars Episode IX under the watchful eye of director JJ Abrams. The cast has been revealed including legacy character such as Lando, Luke, and Leia all returning to complete the Skywalker story.

Most intriguing is a rumor from Movieweb that states the untitled Episode IX has enough story to be split up into two films. It’s already assumed the film will be the longest movie in the series.

This is a surprising move that Lucasfilm is possibly considering. The two-part film idea failed more than it succeed a few years ago. However, the idea has been revisited recently with Avengers Infinity War and broke box office records. The second part of Infinity Wars is due in theaters in 2019.

The difference is, though, is that the two Avengers movies were intended to tell two distinct, if strongly linked, stories. It could be somewhat unsatisfying if Episode IX is simply cut down the middle and released in two halves a year apart.

Regardless, there’s very little doubt that Star Wars: Episode IX will be the longest movie in the series to date, whether it’s split in two or not, so at the very least, we can look forward to one heck of a rollercoaster ride when it hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
