You can’t say SONY isn’t trying. After getting Tom Hardy to star as Venom, the Marvel Adjacent Cinematic Universe has now locked up DC Film’s Joker, Jared Leto. Leto will be playing the Living Vampire, Morbius!
Morbius the Living Vampire (aka Nobel Prize winner Dr. Michael Morbius Ph.D. and M.D.) was introduced in 1971’s The Amazing Spider-Man #101. Morbius was born with a rare blood disease and it was his fervent desire for a cure that caused him to develop vampiric powers and tendencies, including superhuman strength and agility, enhanced healing, and a lust for human blood. It should be noted that Morbius is not a traditional vampire; instead, he is referred to a “pseudo-vampire.”
The studio already has a director lined up for the film in Daniel Espinosa, who helmed Sony’s sci-fi thriller, Life. The script was written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, the minds behind Netflix’s Lost in Space revival, and is set to position the Spider-Man villain as an antihero.
While Warner Bros and DC Films continues to figure if they want to do 1 or 3 Joker films, SONY and Marvel are very committed to making this dark corner of the Spider-Verse work with Spidey’s more darker supporting characters.
What do you think? Are you excited for a Morbius film?
