Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet gets renewed for a third season

Netflix renews their zombie family comedy series Santa Clarita Diet.

Netflix’s half-hour zombie family comedy seemed like an odd idea for a series when it debuted in 2017. However thanks to the lovable stars, Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant, the series has found a nice niche audience. An audience that has successfully help convince Netflix to renew it for another season.

The series follows a family after the mother (Barrymore) suddenly becomes a flesh-eating zombie, and they attempt to stay a normal family while also occasionally murdering and chopping up victims. Think The Walking Dead meets Modern Family.

Diet has a great balance of comedy hijinks and truly horrific gore scenes that would make even the most loyal George Romero fan respect. Viewership doesn’t appear to have dropped off too much from the first season. Season two has only been on the streaming platform for a few weeks and has already given Netflix enough confidence to renew it.

Santa Clarita Diet is now the third fastest Netflix series to get renewed. Only behind Marvel’s Daredevil and Fuller House.

The show was created by Victor Fresco for the streaming service Netflix, starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant. Fresco serves as the showrunner and is an executive producer alongside Barrymore, Olyphant, Aaron Kaplan, Tracy Katsky, Chris Miller, Ember Truesdell and Ruben Fleischer.

The series stars Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant as Joel and Sheila Hammond. Co-starring alongside them is Liv Hewson as Abby Hammond and Skyler Gisondo as Eric Bemis. With Nathan Fillion as Gary West, the decapitated zombie head.

The series centers around Joel and Sheila Hammond are everyday suburban real estate agents in Santa Clarita, California. The couple faces a series of obstacles when Sheila has a physical transformation into a zombie and starts craving human flesh. With Joel and the family trying to help Sheila through the trying time, they have to deal with neighbors, cultural norms and getting to the bottom of a potentially mythological mystery.

The second season ended on a surprising cliffhanger that will for sure leave fans in suspense until season three. Season three premieres in 2019.
