Amazon Commits To A Five Season Lord of The Rings Series

Amazon is going all in with their Lord of the Rings series that will cost them a billion dollars!

Thanks to the phenomenon that is HBO’s Game of Thrones, it seems like every streaming service is looking for their own sword and sorcery epic. Amazon has found theirs. Viewers will be transported back to the mythical plains of Middle Earth in Amazon’s Lord of the Rings tv series. Amazon plans to have a definite start and finish for the series. Amazon is committed to a five-season-long series that will cost at least a billion dollars.

The deal was revealed in a new article dropped by the Hollywood Reporter, which estimates that after you take into consideration the cost of casting, producers, visual effects, and everything else associated with bringing the fantasy epic to the streaming service – Amazon could be on the hook for $1 billion or more. Now, even if you subtract the $250 mil from the total that Amazon bought the rights for, a production budget of $750 million still seems incredibly high (rounding out at $150 mil per season).

In comparison, HBO’s Game of Thrones has cost north of 10 million dollars an episode, with the final season set to cost more than 15 million each episode. It’s reported that Amazon may use material from Peter Jackson’s films in their new series. It isn’t known what sort of material” will be revisited or if that opens the door to actors from the film series to make an appearance of some kind.

Greenberg Glusker attorney Matt Galsor, who served as the chief architect of the deal with Amazon and repped the Tolkien estate, talked about the deal saying:

“This is the most complicated deal I’ve ever seen, but it was handled relatively quickly, in a way that brought the parties together in a close relationship. It was tough, but everybody liked each other and felt like a team more as the deal closed.”

Here is the brief description of the upcoming Lord of the Rings tv series:

Set in Middle Earth, the television adaptation will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The deal includes a potential additional spin-off series.

The original series of films from director Peter Jackson garnered several Oscars. Lord of the Rings was considered to be one of the most significant film projects ever undertaken. The films had a budget of $281 million. The entire project took eight years, with the filming for all three movies done simultaneously in New Zealand. While the films follow the book’s general storyline, they do omit some of the novel’s plot elements.

These omitted plot elements from the films could make their way into the new Amazon series. No release date for the series has been revealed at this time.
