If you saw Ready Player One this weekend you will have noticed quite a few giant robots and kaiju in the big pop culture spectacle. The 1930’s King Kong made a frightening appearance as well as the T-Rex from Jurassic Park during the racing scene. But its during the final battle of the film that made Godzilla fans rejoice.
When the main villain takes out his avatar, the massive mechanical kaiju, Mecha-Godzilla (modeled after the Kiryu design) the classic Akira Ifukube Godzilla March played. To my knowledge, this is the first time Ifukube’s Zilla theme has ever been used in a new way in an American film.
Along with the classic Godzilla villain, our heroes of the film jumped into memorable robots of their own. The Iron Giant and the Gundam battle suit that had an epic fight against Mecha-Godzilla. Ready Player One is now playing at a theater near you.
